The JL's were run off 4 punch 200 DSM's

Back then that was about as sick as it got . Ref 405 and 2 altec Lansing 6x9's it really did sound incredible . Had a seperate 200 amp salt running the show

Personal I go super simple and clean now

And still do high 130 flat 140 with inter 1500rms total very easily with what's around today

I've got 2x 8" on 400rms do mid 30 in a trunk car

Unheard of in the late 90

Let alown 400 rms to sub in everyday we as the amps were so dame expensive

Now you do top notch stuff installed you're self for 1k and 2 for a complete system doing mid 40's all day everyday

I must be tired , I get your drift but only understood half if what you said . You are right though 4 punch 200's cost me $2400 then. If I spent that kinda $ on a sub amp today might have hard time fitting it in the car lol

At there are some thirsty sub available now days

So less and more powerful would be the answer
