can't figure it out

Recommended Posts

While at my aunt's house they had an old desktop they had layin around. They said that I could have it if I could fix it I could have it. All I knew is the monitor went bad (or so I thought), so I went out and got a used monitor from a computer resale shop. The monitor was working in the store so I know it should work here at the house. After hooking up the new monitor it still had the same problem. Which is no display. So I thought a graphics card would help but still having the no display problem. Two things come to mind, either the motherboard or hard drive not working. Could be something else. The computer is Dell Deminsions 2400 desktop.

Unplug everything inside. Pull the ram leave the CPU in. I mean HDD cables, usb headers and other useless things. Only leave the power header plugged in.

Turn it on it should beep. That will tell you if it has a working mono and CPU. If you get a beep. Turn it off and Put one stick of ram in and try again.

It shouldn't beep now.

If it doesn't beep it may go ahead and post.

Also use the built on video card if it has it and before you start move the jumper over and reset the CMOS then move it back.

Add one thing at a time till it stops posting

This is assuming it posts at all.

Edit. Mobile typing fail

The cause of the problem was the last thing I would of expected. I had one last thing to install before it started working. That last thing was an old modem, think it came with the computer but not sure. At least it's working so that's all I care about.
