Network card limiting?

Recommended Posts

So I just moved out of my parents place to attend school (woo!).

Back home my DL speed was shit, right around 5mb/sec

Now my speed is just under 20mb/sec

The problem is that I still download files right at 1-1.5mb/sec. Is this because my onboard network is just limiting it? I have an old alienware aurora r3 board

downloading files from where? what site?

are you talking about 20 megabits per second (mbps)? or 20 megabytes per second (mBps)?

a 100mbps NIC will easily handle a 20mbps connection.

I was downloading a torrent with 5000 seeds and 1200 leech. Whenever I downloaded games from Steam or Origin at home it was the same speed. I can download another game if necessary.

20 mbps

LOL dont talk about downloading torrents bro. only legal shit. just saying.

steam always maxes out my 16mbps (but i get around 2.2 megs :D) easy. i only have a 100mbps NIC.

so what speed are you getting on Steam with a 20mbps connection? you should be getting around 2.5mBps

Downloading from steam is 2.2

I was thinking there would be a bigger jump in dl speed from 5 to 20 on speedtest but I guess I just dont understand the topic at hand well enough to comprehend it

Clearly.

What I meant was: why does 5mbps = 1mbps dl on files and 20mbps = 2.2mbps dl on files?
