timc31610 Posted February 26, 2014 Report Posted February 26, 2014 What kind of box? Sealed or ported. The heat you feel is from the voice coil heating up, usually not a good sign unless that's your thang. timc31610 Posted February 27, 2014 Report Posted February 27, 2014 Slightly smaller than recommended box should not cause your coils to heat up. Most likely a distorted signal from your amp. If your amp has a subsonic filter set it for 26-28hz turn the volume down on the receiver and bump it up a little on the amp. You could be clipping, causing the the coil to heat up. timc31610 Posted February 27, 2014 Report Posted February 27, 2014 I think he is using a PA type amp, or a home stereo receiver. Now that I think about it if it is a stereo receiver it has no HPF sending the full range to the sub. In home tower speakers there are usually passive crossovers or resistors in series with each speaker.
