To overpower or to underpower....

Im looking to power my components that have an RMS rating of 100 watts. Im looking to see if I should overpower them or if I should underpower them? I know that overpowering is preferred... but I am likely going to be running components only for a while because the budget I had saved for subs has dissappeared.

The components I have are RF T2652-s.

Active or passive? Depends what you really mean by over power, I've always ran higher powered amps than my speakers have been rated for but that doesn't actually mean that was too much power for them...

Get a strong amp and then lay back on the gain to the desired amount.

Less stress on the amp, and more headroom for the components.

Plus if you decide to upgrade components in the future you may not have to go through the process of buying another amplifier and selling your current one.

By getting a more powerful amplifier than needed you also make it much easier to not send a clipped signal to the components.

This is where the idea of under-powering came into existence. With an amplifier that is rated at a low wattage -around 20w when this sprung up, olden times- it is much easier to accidentally clip the signal than if you ran a 100w amp to the speakers and adjusted the gain to the desired Watt RMS.

So its safer to go with wattage that is equal to or greater than the speakers to mitigate clipping? Makes sense.

If I used a DD1... that would set the gain for the Amp, how would it affect the speakers, or would it?

Using a DD1 would set the amplifier to the maximum potential it has, so if you got an amplifier that is rated at 250 W for 125 W components you would be sending quite a bit over the RMS of the speaker to it.

However, if you got an amplifier that does 150 W and you set it with a DD1, you would be set to a maximum potential that would be in the "safe" working range for the components.

The name of the game is to be able to understand what you are doing, and be able to stay safe. :)
