Possible for a 1500 w amp to do 2200 watts?

I just changed my sub today and I went to set up my gains with the dd1 and the test tones on my iPod instead of the cd. We'll I set the gains to the max undistorted and then I probed my amp outputs with a dam and it read 47.3 v and according to the formula at 1ohm that should be 2237watts right? The amp is a Memphis mc1.1500 Memphis supports says the amp is rated 1600w rms but at 12v so is this right? If this amp is doing 2200w now I understand why I blew a Rockford fosgate t2 15. We'll I turned the gain down till the dam read 39v because I'm using an old school mojo now till I get enough for some sundowns it's 1000w rms and 2000w peak .. Any explanation for this?

Well for one, was the gain set with a dd1 when you blew the tf t2?

for 2, if you did voltage times amp you got va not rms watts. You have to remember once the amp gets heated up it won't produce as much power, then you have efficiency. On a test rone you will see a higher output then on music. Music is dynamic. My 1500.1bdcp is rated at 1950 @ 1ohm. Now on music it pulls an average of 100amps, at 14v that's 1400va. Still not watts though. In reality if that amp is pulling 100amps at 14v I'm only getting around 1k-1200 rms and no more then the 1400 roughly.

in short is it possible to get that much power from you amp yes. Is it possible to get that kind of power on music no. Why? Because on music the impedance constantly changes.

Watch the D'amore engineering free education videos. He does an excellent job explaining why clamping is inaccurate. On the example he gave the power factor was like 60ish%, which you have to multiply by the VA. (60%) * (2200) puts you right back at around rated power.
