ultraspeed Posted May 8, 2014 Report Posted May 8, 2014 Guys I am new to this building sub box stuff , can you please explain to me something. Say im building a sealed box and the suggested box size is .50-.60 CF what will i notice different in the performance from a .50 to a .60 sealed box? thanks for the help
audiofanaticz Posted May 8, 2014 Report Posted May 8, 2014 Most likely nothing except the box will be a tad more efficient and potentially louder in the larger box with the same power. However you wont hear, see, or feel the difference.
Aj11 Posted May 8, 2014 Report Posted May 8, 2014 someone here said it the best, " it's the difference between going 99mph and 100mph" there's a difference but not much. but if you went from .5ft box and 3ft box would be a big increase jvc deck stinger 1800 front hc 2000 kinetic rear 2 runs of 1/0g big 3/4 ct 60.4 2 ct 1400.1 ct EXO 15 d1 lots of deadner type r comps front stage 6 kicker tweets rear stage lots of great stuff coming soon ho alt more bats ct comps for front stage more deadner sweet amp rack lots of L.E.D lights new deck (thinking 80 prs, or flip out)
bbeljefe Posted May 8, 2014 Report Posted May 8, 2014 ↑ All that's true for sealed enclosures but vented is another story. A smaller change in the volume of a vented enclosure can improve low end response which would make the sub play lower notes louder or even audibly where in a smaller box they were inaudible. Generally speaking though, a change of .1ftⁿ isn't going to make much difference at all in a .5ftⁿ or larger box. You'd need an increase of ~30% or more to hear any appreciable difference in vented enclosures and probably 50% or more in sealed. Aj11 Posted May 8, 2014 Report Posted May 8, 2014 yea, if you had a 12 in a vented .5ft box it would sound like garbage! but if you put that same 12 in a 1.5ft box it would sound much better! then that same 12 in a 2.5ft box your low end output would increase. but do the same thing in a sealed box it would change but not nearly as much! heres a analogy that will help. sealed box .5ft = 50mph sealed 1.5ft = 55mph sealed 2.5ft =60mph vented box .5ft =10mph vented 1.5ft = 75mph vented 2.5ft= 100mph just a example not literal jvc deck stinger 1800 front hc 2000 kinetic rear 2 runs of 1/0g big 3/4 ct 60.4 2 ct 1400.1 ct EXO 15 d1 lots of deadner type r comps front stage 6 kicker tweets rear stage lots of great stuff coming soon ho alt more bats ct comps for front stage more deadner sweet amp rack lots of L.E.D lights new deck (thinking 80 prs, or flip out)
ultraspeed Posted May 11, 2014 Author Report Posted May 11, 2014 well here is the challenge i face! I have a 2007 dodge ram quad cab and under the rear seats are about my only choice! and with that said i have listen to a ton of youtube vids and to me they all sound like garbage seems that a fiberglass box is going to be my best choice. Now when i listen to these trucks they all seem peaky/high pitch not low/deep enough, and for some reason the subs just sound crappy almost as if they get a pop sound to them. Anyone have good ideas what I need to do to get this thing to sound good? and should maybe I go with a sundown sa 8 since im limited on air space? Maybe there is a way to do a 8 with ported friberglass not sure how that would sound? Please help!
ultraspeed Posted May 11, 2014 Author Report Posted May 11, 2014 I know i cant use a box but if I got this sound out of some some 8s in my truck id be very happy , as I am not looking for max loudness but I dont want it peaky either!
Aj11 Posted May 11, 2014 Report Posted May 11, 2014 if you can get a full cubic foot under each seat you Can get a pair of 8s in a ported box. Most people think 8s are to small or not worth it. but if you have the budget you can Get.your hands on some good 8s. 8s that put most kids (who blare there systems at stop lights and think gain=volume) pair of 12s to shame! what is you goal for this? just filing out your system and have nice sounding, even bass? showing off to your friends and impressing them? Also what budget do you have for the sub(s) and amp? do you have a amp? jvc deck stinger 1800 front hc 2000 kinetic rear 2 runs of 1/0g big 3/4 ct 60.4 2 ct 1400.1 ct EXO 15 d1 lots of deadner type r comps front stage 6 kicker tweets rear stage lots of great stuff coming soon ho alt more bats ct comps for front stage more deadner sweet amp rack lots of L.E.D lights new deck (thinking 80 prs, or flip out)
ultraspeed Posted May 11, 2014 Author Report Posted May 11, 2014 I'm going for SQ I want a clean sound sub sealed box is fine or ported whatever gets the job done. If I do a 8 it will be either DC audio or sundow sa v2 8. No amp or sub /subs purchased yet. Currently have a JL hd600x4 powering hertz energetic components up front and a set of pioneer coaxial in back doors. I'm getting ready to switch the components to a active setup with a 3sixty.3 and the JL amp and put a 2ch amp on the coaxial rears. I'm not going for super loud all out bass sound quality is key I'm thinking something around 130db range. Hell 1 8" will prolly do what I want so long as it stays super clean sounding. Like you said though 1 good 8 or 2 good 8s. As for a amp on the subs make suggestion on size and beand although kinda leaning toward rockford unless I can get DC or sundown at a good price
