Calculating Alternator Amps

Recommended Posts

Hey guys. I hear alternators do not produce there rated amps unless your rpm is on the high. Is this true?? And is there a way to know or calculate the amps an alternator produces at idle. Say for a 120A alternator??

Yes most alts have to be running between 1200 RPM and 2000 RPM depending on manufacture , to reach full output . the manufacture could have a 120 amp alt putting out 60 Amps @ idle . there is a way to load test and alt with the right tools . you need to research this a lil more . to many variable factors to just guess.

No 1 But me paid for this stuff and NO FREEBIES so no brand names (No Free Advertisement )

ill say it like i always say it. F##K the DD-1. I don't care if you or anyone buys one. (well i do, but that isn't my point) Get an O-scope in the very minimum and learn how to use it or you are just guessing your settings like every other noob. :) once you master the O-scope then step up to a DD-1 or even better a DD-1 Plus.

Thanks guys. So on average it is about half the alt amp rating when on idle. And yah those testing methods sound so complicated. Lol. Anyway just wanted to know the idle so I can approximate what size battery I might need in the back. Thanks again.

Psh, I WISH this was true haha.. Id have a 340A alt if it was B)

But yea.. The way I would do it is with an ammeter/DC clamp meter.. Like how Kyle mentioned.

Right.

And the reverse of that, is, my new hair pin, is rated at 270 at full rev, but, at 240 at IDLE. :)

You want idle, you sacrafice top end, and it works the other way. Ya cant have your beer and cake it to........ or whatever.

Shitty video. We were drunk. But, i have a clamp on my alt, pretty much 85% of the time. Not to bad for a 3 phase. And HOT AS BALLS. Dont look at the TL, look at the FLUKE (yellow box) on the dash, right side.

Any idea if a 120A alternator and 2 70AH batteries would push a 2000rms amp?? Big 3 already done with 0 gauge

My stock 110A alt and 2 G24s (75aH each) were just fine for my 2000watts.
