Adding extra battery in the trunk question

Recommended Posts

Batteries don't make power. They store the charge they are given. I never said he "NEEDS" an alt. I said in my opinion that would be the best route. His alt isnt keeping up with his demands, dropping him to 10.8V at idle, which isnt good because he's probably only at low 12's when the alt is putting out everything it can. Can he add another battery, yes. Would it help, yes. But only temporarily because he can not charge the battery back up with his alt.

It's a 2000W system? If OP doesnt want to upgrade to a larger setup requiring more power, then getting an alt that outputs 50 to 80 amps more than what he has is a great idea, and better than adding a storage unit to a setup than cant create anything to store.

and if his batteries are always that low he will kill his alt really quickly. If you are dropping below 11v adding batteries is not the solution.

if you look in you phone book, or google you might be able to find a local generator specialist type shop that will rewind a factory alternator to the amperage you want for wayy less than a brand name HO alternator company.

back when i had a 78 coupe deville, i found it had only a 60 amp alternator, when i used the cigarette lighter in the car, no bass would hit.

i had went to the junk yard found a nice looking alterntor from the same car, took it and had it rebuilt to 150 amps. cost me less than buying a new auto zone 60 amp alternator, this was in 2002, and i believe it cost me $120 or so to get it rebuilt . not sure of idle output or what not, never tested it, but the company was reputable. and it did perform like it was at least 125-150 amps. blower running lights and brights on, all 6 12's beating and bass never dropped out like it used to.

keep this in mind, as voltage drops current goes up. take it easy on you cars BCM and ECM computers. dont ruin a car cuzz you gotta have bass.

Can anyone tell me why no one recommended a power cell? Dont they have good reserve power and they are alot cheaper? im thinking about adding a second battery to the back and instead of something like a d3100 i was thinking about a xp950 from xs power.

The xp series are supplemental batteries while the d series is for both starting and supplemental A lot of people use d3100s as secondary batteries because they were around before the xp series came out. so now that both xp and d series, people dont know which to get. but Im not sure if the capacity is the same. if a d3100 = xp3000  .

in your case though a xp950 would probably charge a lot faster than a d3100 since its a much smaller battery.

Ok I am convinced on the H/O Alt, I will add it to my early November budget. What's the minimum Alt amperage that I need to support 2000w? I even did a clamp test average wattage was only 700w, I so wanna see the full potential of this Amp (running sundown saz3500v2 @ 2 ohms). And hopefully in December will be @ 1 ohm.

I said 80aH because anything less is likely a single battery, and anything above that is likely two or more batteries. I guess I was getting too technical to the point is was throwing people off. my fault!

Cables and wires almost never fail; the terminations do.

biggest you can support. like 270-300 amps. higher amperage = less idle output so you know.
