quietgolfcourse Posted October 5, 2014 Report Posted October 5, 2014 Hey everybody, long time reader of this forum, first time poster. Figured it was time since I am getting all my gear together for my first decent system. I just received my DD-1 in the mail and went to set up my system, which at the moment is just mids and highs. My deck is a pioneer AVH-p3200dvd, the DD-1 showed it clean all the way up to 40/40 with settings flat and all pass filters turned off on both the -0db 1khz and 40hz tracks. Then I set up my mids/highs amp with the -5db 1khz track. The mids/highs amp is an older punch P5002, the one with the chrome end caps. The speakers are a pair of alpine type r 6x8s, rated at 100 watts rms each side. When I turn my deck all the way up to 40/40, it is much louder than I am used tothem being , with more midbass than I expected from some 6x8s. However, I think I can smell a faint burnt smell when the volume is up near the top. I am just wondering if I am imagining this, or if the amp is just too much for the speakers. The amp is rated at 125 x 2 @ 4 ohms and puts out a little more than that. Am I expecting too much power handling from these 6x8s? The older type-r 15s I have handled a t1000bdcp on each one (with a most likely dirty signal) and they are rated 750 rms each, so I figured these speakers would handle 50% more than rated if it was clean power. Just looking on advice on whether I am imagining the smell or if I am going to blow these speakers.

quietgolfcourse Posted October 6, 2014 Author Report Posted October 6, 2014 Might be too much power. Did you reset the high pass filter after you set the gain? Yes, I set the High pass on the deck to 100 hz before playing music.
quietgolfcourse Posted October 6, 2014 Author Report Posted October 6, 2014 that -5 track combined with you giving those speakers to much credit with power handling combined with an underrated smp is the perfect storm for death Ok thanks I will try retuning it with the -0db tracks and see what happens. Thanks for the quick responses guys.
quietgolfcourse Posted October 6, 2014 Author Report Posted October 6, 2014 Might be too much power. Did you reset the high pass filter after you set the gain? Oh and all equalizer settings were kept completely flat after tuning also.
bcbrassard Posted October 6, 2014 Report Posted October 6, 2014 Ya I would back the gains down some, if RF rates that amp at 125x2 but it puts out more like 150 then even a clean signal with too much power can smoke those speakers. Keep the amp and maybe upgrade to components in the future. 6x8s can sound pretty good though. Put some in my brothers Ranger, they where P683s off a PBR300x4 with no distortion they get loud and sound pretty good doing it.
