External Port ?

Is there any cons to having an external port ? Going to working on a Dodge Ram console box and there's just not enough space..and i need the back seats this time around..

External ports are easier to change/adjust port length/size, but usually harder to mount (because of the awkward size)

I plan on a slot port screwed to the top of the box, as a arm rest almost.. thanks for the input
