Question about 6x9s in rear deck of Grand Am

So I have a Grand Am obviously and the speaker positioning for the rear speakers is in the rear deck firing up from the trunk. I'm running a set of Infinity Reference 6x9s back there and they sound pretty good on deck power but I feel like I'm getting some poop sound because of them essentially being mounted in baffle board. It seems like with the seats up and locked into place the sound quality is higher and I'm wondering if that's because the waves coming from the back of the speaker cone are causing issues with cancellation or something. I have subs in the trunk so I don't want the seats up if I can avoid it despite the increase in SQ.

Would it be reasonable to try putting the 6x9s in boxes instead of the current setup to clean the sound up a little bit? If so should I run ported or sealed? I have an 1800w amp powering the subwoofers so bass production isn't really the issue as much as cleaning up the dirt a little. Would it be beneficial to mount the 6x9 boxes in the kicks in the front of the car and carpet them in to move the stage to the front? I have an 800.4 on the way and Intend to get some higher powered speakers in the near future but in the meantime these poor things just sound dirty.

6x9 are infinite baffle speakers, so when you lower the seats your removing the box so to speak to the speaker, now will they be better in smaller boxes for 6x9's is up to you but will have more bass then an open trunk into the cabin.

The reason why they might sound better when the seats are up and locked into place is because the speakers have a smaller space/enclosure. When you put the seats down you're enlarging their enclosure and when it's too big a speaker will lose quality. You can seal them off in the rear deck and then not have that problem or you could put them in a enclosed place such as cabinets or even in rear doors if there's enough room.
