Recone Help

Hey fellas.

At the moment, I have 2 blown DX-15 American Bass subs. I'd like to rebuild/recone them with better parts and convert them from a single 4 ohm coil to a dual 2 ohm coil. I've found all the parts I need, but I'd like some help determining the amount of power I might be able to put through them.

Currently, the stock coils can take up to 500 RMS and 1000 peak. I'd like to try and achieve more than that, otherwise, I might scrap the subs. Here's the link to the voice coil I'm installing. Let me know what they might be able to achieve, or how I can calculate what amount of power will work.

I wouldn't want to run more than 1k rms to a 2.5in coil. It can be done, but over 1k is really pushing it imo. But hey I know nothing about sub building. Someone a little more experienced like audiofanaticz or some of the other sub builders here may chime in later.

I just want something that will hit at least 500 rms or a bit more. I don't want to buy the dang thing, spend a couple days building it, and only achieve 400 rms or something lol.

Well you said that you want to achieve higher than 500 rms. A quality flatwound 2.5 inch coil should be able to handle from 500-750 no problem. Like I said you could go up to 1k but that is kind of pushing it. The coil is only a small part of determining power handling. You need to take things like the suspension and cooling into account. Have you ever built a recone before? If you haven't I would recommend contacting PSI to build you a recone. You can tell them the specifics of your woofer and what you want to accomplish, and he will build a recone to suit your needs.

I haven't rebuilt them before. I've looked into PSI rebuilds, but would very much like to do it myself. I got the subs for free (traded for them), so I'd like to experiment on them before moving onto different things. As long as I can get at least 500 rms, I'll be good. Thanks for the help!
