Black Beauty Project Build - 06 Ford F-250 Super Duty **1/27/18 - New pics starting on page 41**

Ok, well I thought I'd post some pictures this morning. You know, one thing I hate about Photosuckit, is it always scrambles the pictures. Doesn't matter that I take them back to back to back, always in order the way I'm doing things. For whatever reason, half of the pictures that I take, end up out of order. Makes this a pain to deal with. Ok end rant!

So Yesterday I started the second attempt at filler and the new flush mount surround. I wanted to put something in the tablet hole, so as not to get a bunch of filler in there while doing this. There are some odd angles to fill at so I decided to make a template. I started with 1/4" MDF, same as the surround is.

Next I had to clean the gorilla glue out of the tablet surround pocket.

20160227_142544.jpg

Then I put some foam tape on the back of the template to raise it up a bit.

Next I needed something that would help me get the template out after the filler is on it, and at the same time, fill the small gaps between the template and the surround. So I tapped the ends, and then put a strip of tape as a puller over the top of it around the back side.

20160227_143715.jpg

Then taped over that with a few layers to secure it and fill in some more on the sides.

In place.

Showing how I would pull it out.

Now it's time to do a little sanding and getting ready for filler. I picked up some sanding discs and the arbor for my air grinder at harbor freight.

So I decided that I needed more hold on the surround and the panel. So I decided to drill 1/8" holes around the outside where the plastic of the dash panel is at.

I taped off the right side, so that I wouldn't get filler where I didn't want it.

20160227_154312.jpg

Then put the template back in the pocket.

Then, Time for round 2

As you can see here, I waited too long to take the template out. Had some issues around the edges. Not a huge deal, fixable. Definitely not catastrophic like last time.

Got it all sanded down. Much better blending this time.

Time for a lighter coat and a move toward finishing of it. This time I'll be using some Rage Extreme filler.

I'm going to need some sanding blocks for this. So, like last time, I made some up with some 2 x 4 scraps. Have a block that I can interchange paper with that I bought from Home Depot, and then made up a 150 grit and a 220 grit block.

20160227_170107.jpg

After a step through each grit, I'm pretty happy with how it looks right now.

20160227_171645.jpg

Time to prep for some filler primer and see where I'm at.

There's the left side of the gauge cluster that needs to be addressed as well. It's the same style as the head unit area. Smooth and non textured. So these two spots will look the same. I sanded this down a bit with some 100 grit.

Ok, it's ready. Let's do this. Using some of this filler primer for this step. I have to get some more, this one hasn't been used in a while. I ended up messing with it for about 15 minutes before I got it to work. I had just enough to do this one coat on it.

20160227_174521.jpg

Done. I'm happy with it.

It does show me where I need to do some spot filling.

While I waited for that to dry, I decided to turn my attention to something else that needed addressing. I decided to go away from the other HDMI adapter, the red one, and go to this samsung adapter. Reason being, is because if I do in fact go to an Optical input to the processor, I don't want to have to deal with the turns, and possible sharp corners, or angles, etc. with the toslink cable. So my thinking is that if I use the HDMI cable, it can withstand those issues with no problems. The other side to that is, the shorter the toslink run, the stronger the signal. A 12" run, will be better than a 12 foot run. At least that's the information that I got from the few places I researched and videos I watched on it. So that's where I came up with this decision.

However, here's the problem with this connection. The casing around the USB portion that plugs into the tablet itself is too fat. It's the same height of the tablet. That's an issue.

20160227_180927.jpg

HOWEVER, if we remove the outer case of the USB end, it is significantly thinner and easier to put into the surround.

20160227_181123.jpg

20160227_181135.jpg

But I don't want just that hanging into the surround. I wanted to make sure to protect it. SO a little heat shrink will go a long way for that.

I had to see what it looked like at this point.

20160227_182715.jpg

I marked out the spots where I need to do some work.

20160227_183229.jpg

While I was working on all of this, I noticed a crack on the right side. The right side at the bottom is the weakest side. So I wasn't too surprised, but still, was a bummer after all that work. So, I added some epoxy to it to strengthen it and figured this is where I'd call it a night.

20160227_184306.jpg

BUTTTT my brain wouldn't stop working. I was satisfied with it, but not completely satisfied with it. There were some spots where I thought it needed a bit more at the edge where the tablet sits, and some of it looked to rounded, and so I was thinking of what I could do to remedy this. Here's what I came up with.

2 sided tape

20160227_195427.jpg

cut down to the width that I wanted.

20160227_200138.jpg

And then put around the inside of the surround. One of the things I forgot about, was that I am still undecided on what material I'm using for the back of the tablet pocket. I thought about metal, but I thought about suede too, so I don't know. But I needed to take that into account, and hadn't up until this point. So that's why I ended up on this height.

20160227_200423.jpg

This gives me a pretty even edge all the way around.

20160227_200411.jpg

20160227_200416.jpg

20160227_200423.jpg

I sanded the primer down a bit with some 150 grit. That way there were some grooves in it for the new filler to hold onto.
