benefits of using an external active crossover vs amps internal crossover

i'm trynna decide if an external crossover is need for my system, never used them before but yet i seen a lot of cars with them. i always thought the settings on the amps did the same thing

I guess it comes down to your amps, the crossover you have or may get, and your needs of either said crossover.

If your amp crossover is good for 250hz to 5000hz for example, and your external crossover is also good for 250hz to 5000hz, then there is no real need for that external crossover.

Sometimes the amplifiers crossover network doesn't allow you to set the limits at your desired or needed frequency per the speakers requirements so than an external crossover would benefit you with that.

Sometimes people would rather do all their crossover settings digitally so they buy a processor and with a couple clicks on a computer they can change things on the fly instead of turning a knob with a screw driver not knowing the actual frequency they are crossed over at (unless you have a smd cc-1).

There are also people running their mids/highs actively and many 4channels dont have a well designed bandpass style crossover, or a frequency multiplier switch so then an external crossover would give the user the flexibility needed to cross the speakers over correctly in most cases, but again depending on what crossover they buy.
