ptcary Posted April 9, 2008 Report Posted April 9, 2008 (edited) Question for the experts here. I am getting started on my first set of custom sail panels for my front doors, and want to know about resin to coat them with. I am talking about the stuff that Steve pours into his boxes when he sets them on an angle to seal the sides together. It looks like a brown liquid resin. Question is, If I build my pods out of MDF, add some filler to them, is there a way I can pour this resin over them, let it dry, trim/sand the edges, and end up with a nice smooth surface for painting a gloss color??? I was hoping to not use cloth or fiberglass mat, because the pod will be mostly two pieces of stacked MDF, just wanted to fill in some areas with filler, then smooth coat it with resin, then primer/paint. Am I way off?? Edited April 9, 2008 by ptcary PTCary 2003 SMD PT Cruiser 2011 Honda CBR 250R 2010 Mazda 3i Sport MY BUILD LOG

Guest MegaloManiac Posted April 9, 2008 Report Posted April 9, 2008 use the glass for structural. You do not want to use a filler in thick uses, it will crack. Filler is only used for skin coat, for smoothing it out.

For clarification, I'm not talking about the fiberglass mat sheets that Steve resins to the box sides and floor, I'm talking about the stuff in the pic above that he is drying that is sealing the connection between the side of the box and the floor, the brown liquid. That is just resin with no fiberglass in it right? It's the same stuff you guys paint onto the cloth?? If all else fails I will post a pic of the MDF pods when I get them built then ask you guys how to "coat" them. PTCary 2003 SMD PT Cruiser 2011 Honda CBR 250R 2010 Mazda 3i Sport MY BUILD LOG
Coolwazabi Posted April 9, 2008 Report Posted April 9, 2008 ^^ yes.. the thick honey looking stuff is resin and its the same stuff we paint onto the cloth
ptcary Posted April 9, 2008 Author Report Posted April 9, 2008 (edited) ^^ yes.. the thick honey looking stuff is resin and its the same stuff we paint onto the cloth Ok, progress here for me! So I guess a better question is can I use that resin to coat MDF for a nice smooth glasslike finish, and then primer and paint it? I guess no? Or is there something better to coat MDF with so I can paint it shiny gloss white? Also, could I just have some tan bedliner material sprayed onto the MDF pod to finish it, and be done with it, kinda like the wall in the Civic and the Escalade?? I am just wanting to finish coat the MDF pod, not shape it with cloth or fiberglass. Edited April 9, 2008 by ptcary PTCary 2003 SMD PT Cruiser 2011 Honda CBR 250R 2010 Mazda 3i Sport MY BUILD LOG
andym85 Posted April 9, 2008 Report Posted April 9, 2008 (edited) you dont need resin to get a shinny finish....just put a few coats of primer on it, and sand between coats. then a coat of paint, wet sand, coat of paint, wet sand, coat of paint, wet sand, coat of paint...and ur done....do it as many times as you want until you get your desired finish, and gradually increase the grit of sandpaper between steps... thats how i did this box below...i think we did like 2 or 3 coats of primer, and maybe 4 or 5 coats of paint...
