Adding a second battery?

Recommended Posts

If I were to keep my stock 140a alternator and battery and add an agm in back, would the agm be able to be solely charged by the car or would I also have to buy a charger? I'm running an ia 10.1.

I've been wondering about this for a while. I can't decide whether I wanna drop $750 on a 250a alternator or around $400 on a battery and agm charger.

I had the same issue when deciding whether to go with a battery or alt. From what I was told, with adding the extra battery the stock alt wont be able to efficiently charge the secondary battery and you would need a charger to charge it I believe once a week. For me I went with the alt option because it was cheaper and more practical.

$750 for a 250 amp alternator is really high. Make sure you try all the big names. DC, Singer, Ohio generator. Tell them you're looking for something in the 300-330 amp range. You can never have too much alternator. The alternator only puts out as much as it needs to. Try to get a hairpin alternator for better idle performance.

if nobody can give you a price lower than $620, then go with the battery and charger. You will probably want to ether drive around with the music low most of the time or charge the 2nd battery with an external charger once a week like the other guy said.

Upgrade the underhood battery to the biggest agm that will fit and you should be fine, you shouldn't need an h/o alt for 1000rms.

That being said a lot of people's definition of "music" is a clipped 30 hz sine wave with some 80 IQ knuckle head grunting about committing crimes and his genitals.

Us alternators quoted me $750 and they rate theirs hot vs cold so it's really a 330a, gp quoted me $795.. I believe it's so expensive right now because my car has only Been out roughly 3 years (Dodge Dart). Mechman and singer have nothing available yet. Eventually I wanna go bigger as well as upgrade door speakers so maybe I should just spend the extra money on an alternator..

Us alternators belongs to a member here not sure of the quality of the product though I think pioneerforlife just got one so maybe he will chime in.

Gp well to put it nicely I wouldn't give that tool one cent of my money ever.

I haven't heard the greatest things about gp.. Ohio gen asked for a pic of my alternator, but I never sent them one. I'll probably end up doing that in the morning. I have heard good things about us alternators though.

If it's a GOOD 330 amp alternator, then it is worth the price.

However like he said, for just 1000 watts you don't need an aftermarket alt. Just a big XS battery up front.
