Need some suggestions

I recently purchased a Sound Qubed 300 series 12" sub. It is a dual 2ohm set up. I purchased it directly from Sound Qubed. I had it wired to a Rockford power T1000-1 for the break in period with intentions of running it on my Rockford power t1500-1 once broken in. I only got about 3 hrs of use out of it at medium to low volume (breaking in) and the voice coil came completely unwound. So I am in the process of sending it back to be inspected and hopefully warrantied.... Needless to say, I am a bit bummed right now. So on to my need for suggestions......

I need a 12" sub to use temporarily while the Sound Qubed sub is out for service.... I was kicking around the idea of a cheap low budget sub to get me thru...... This is where I need the help..... Any suggestions on something that can handle moderate power in the cheap? I need it to handle a decent amount of power as I use a single sub box (sealed 1.75 cubic feet) in our boat.

Also any ideas on what would cause a coil to come unwound? It completely separated from the former (I think that's the right term) and is laying in the gap like a slinky...

As far as I know SQ is a budget brand and uses cheaper parts so you can expect them to break a little easier than the more expensive brands.

I would just be patient and wait for it to come back and save your money.

I was under the impression they were a fairly decent brand (read some reviews and comments on this forum. That's what actually led me to their site). I used an Alpine R series 12" sub on my power t1500-1 for a couple of days and it held up, had things down to a level that sub could handle... I would have thought the SQ sub would have done a bit better seeing as It was being used with less power...... I am very disappointed with the SQ sub at this point... I have blown up cheaper subs before and never seen a coil come unwound.... Looking at the area of the coil that I can see, there is almost no trace of any glue/epoxy at all on the former or even the coil winding itself.....

Being as I boat in Michigan and we only have a few more weekends before summer is over, I need something in there by this weekend........

To help possible explain what happened just realize that power is rarely the cause of why I sub would "blow up". Even if you were under powering the woofer but were feeding it distortion you could still of had this problem. Heat is probably 90% of the time the reason a woofer fails. You need to verify that your amp wasn't clipping, that you weren't seeing any weird drops in voltage or any other similar issues.

Definitely no drops in voltage. It's in a boat. I run 2 group 31 deka AGM batteries that are both brand new and charged every night via an onboard 40amp AGM charger. I have run this set up on a previous boat with a kicker L7 12 without issue for 6-8 hrs without issue. Also the weekend before I installed the SQ sub, I ran an Alpine R series 12 in there at similar settings and that poor little sub was a champ. Unless something went really wrong with my amp, I will verify that this weekend because it looks like I am gonna be throwing the poor little alpine R series sub back in there........ It was pretty hot out, but I don't think 90* air temps should have any effect on a sub. I realize your explaining possible clipping could have led to excessive heat... I guess I will have to see how the alpine reacts at the same settings. I would hate to blow it up too, if there is something wrong with my amp. So I will keep a close eye on it. Now the SQ sub does smell horrible, but the coil windings themselves don't look burnt or really any signs of heat. They are bright copper, just no epoxy coating or adhesive. So did it burn up first or did it burn up as a result of coming uncoiled and shorting... I have never had a sub uncoil.... I will post a pic on photobucket and post a link here. Maybe give a better idea of the problem....

I've had my HDS312's for three years no problems. Two of which were being fed 600 a piece clipped to all hell (before I knew what a DD-1 was and had no way of verifying distortion). Still in a shitty prefab that was meant for two kicker cvr122's tuned to 40hz. I've had them on a 3500 (2600@ 2ohm) for 9 months, playing decaf songs down to 25hz and unloading and bottoming them out. Tell me about how they break easier than other brands?

To OP, heat caused from overpowering or distorting/clipping is typically the cause. It was ~90 outside, but how hot inside that enclosure? How did you determine where to set the gain on that amplifier? Since you obviously weren't over powering, that leaves a dirty signal. Unless someone else can think of anything else.

Edit: also, I'm quite positive that these subs perform best in ported enclosures, but one of the box gurus might chime in, I'm not sure how sealed enclosures effect subs that are designed/geared more towards ported enclosures.
