Bayuk89 Posted February 14, 2016 Report Posted February 14, 2016 I have a 1999 dodge ram 1500 with a factory 136 amp ALT. My engine is a 5.2 magnum and been reading on some jeep offroad forums and other 4×4 forums that i could get a 160 amp ALT off a dodge durango RT and re wire my plug connection to be able to use on my truck. This is what some of the jeepers have done with their 5.2 engines and has worked. Curious if anyone is runing a higher rated ALT (swap out) in their 2nd gen dodge (94-01)
andru Posted February 15, 2016 Report Posted February 15, 2016 mechman makes an alt for your truck it would give much more idle power than the 160a http://www.mechman.com/alternators/dodge/dakota/3-9l/1992-2003/s-series-6-phase-240-amp-alternator-for-dodge-saddle-mount/
Bayuk89 Posted February 15, 2016 Author Report Posted February 15, 2016 Yea i looked it up awhile ago, i was just looking for a cheaper alternator swap out alternative. I know the mechman is the better choice than me piecing something together.
andru Posted February 15, 2016 Report Posted February 15, 2016 what amps are you running? you might not need that much power but if you do need that much power there isn't any better solutions than a HO alt
Bayuk89 Posted February 15, 2016 Author Report Posted February 15, 2016 Im running a budget build right now with two 15" subs in a 6.6 f3 ported box powered by a 1500 watt amp. I havent got below 13.5 volts yet. I have a spare deka deep cycle battery in my garage i wanted to wire as a second battery in my truck tool box. I wasnt sure if my factory 136 amp alt would handle charging my starting and secondary battery. So i figured swaping over the 160 amp would be better... But i will prolly just upgrade the alt to the mechman when i have the money, im gonna do a wall build with four 15" HDS300 and have a 3-4.5k amp so a HO alt and extra batteries will be needed.
Bayuk89 Posted February 15, 2016 Author Report Posted February 15, 2016 The wall build is gonna be later this year gonna cost about 3 grand for everything...
Bump4life Posted February 15, 2016 Report Posted February 15, 2016 THe problem wont be figuring out the correct part, the hard part is getting a quality OEM alternator with original denso parts. A lot of cheaper aftermarket posers out there. Plus youll need to do a regulator swap as well. Plus you are only upgrading to a small case, if you go with DC Power or US Alternators they make a large case billet for your car. Much better at idle. I agree with you on the OEM parts, the dodge durange has a factory 160 amp option for the R/T model. The durango, ram and dakota all in the same year are internally regulated, only thing different on the ram and the durango is the plug on the back (just have to clip off a plug from a durango from a junk yard) and their mounting points is narrow compaired to the dodge (the jeep guys just ground down the area to make it fit) Nations stater and alternator have an alt for my truck 180 amp for $289 shipped and mechman has a 240 amp for $399 I just figured cause i seen it done on the jeep forums i can get a 160 alt for $35-50 at the junk yard and take it to the alternator shop my company deals with they can test and rebuild for around $50 so now im in $100 for a refreshed swap out alternator thats higher output compaired to my factory. But..... knowing its BETTER to just buy a direct swap alt from mechman or other reputable HO alternator company. I guess i will just buy a mechman when i start my build and save the guess work
