Bayuk89 Posted April 24, 2016 Report Posted April 24, 2016 So i have some older leaded electrical solder ( dont know if its flux core or rosin core, the sticker fell off the spool ) and i have some silver bearing rosin core solder from home depot... When using the lead solder ** on test wire ** it melts very nice and leaves a brighter "shine" on the wire compaired to the silver bearing. Sooo im asking is ok to use the leaded solder over the silver bearing ? I hear leaded is ok to use, also heard silver bearing is supost to be better...
dbackfan12 Posted April 24, 2016 Report Posted April 24, 2016 I personally use 60/40 rosin core solder because I found it melts easier and cleaner than silver bearing solder and its cheaper. I'm pretty sure this is because lead has a nuch lower melting point than silver, but if you do want to use silver just make sure to use a good amount of flux as well.
MotorCityFats13 Posted April 24, 2016 Report Posted April 24, 2016 lead is not a good conductor when compared to most of the other metals but I use lead solder for 3 reasons... one is price, two is when figuring in how much lead the power is passing through its negligent and three battery posts contain more lead than the lug connection so if there was a bottle neck it would be in the battery before the solder
Bayuk89 Posted April 24, 2016 Author Report Posted April 24, 2016 i used the the silver bearing solder to do my power and ground terminals a long time ago, found my leaded solder roll in my tool box and figured i would ask, according to google websites there isnt much of a problem useing leaded electrical solder. i just wanted some real user input, thsnk you for the help.
