What do you mean by 2 X 4?

He means this one:

https://www.minidsp.com/products/minidsp-in-a-box/minidsp-2x4

You can get it for $25 less if you don't want it in a case.

Then for plugins you could get this one: https://www.minidsp.com/products/plugins/2x4-plug-ins/2x4-advanced-detail

or this one: https://www.minidsp.com/products/plugins/2-way-advanced-21-detail

I use the second plugin with my MiniDSPs, but either should work for what you want to do.

I noticed that it said 2 way plus sub integration. Does that mean I can only use one sub on this DSP or can I use all of the outputs for sub outputs? What do you mean by no case? Like no hard outside cover? As for the plug-ins, theyou are the same price so shouldn't I just get the one that has more options just in case I want to use them later on?

The 2.1 advanced can use stereo subs if you desire. If you think you want to do more than two subs then the 2x4 Advanced plugin would probably be better.

Here is the MiniDSP in a case: https://www.minidsp.com/products/minidsp-in-a-box/minidsp-2x4

And here is no case: https://www.minidsp.com/products/minidspkits/2-x-in-4-x-out

The two plugins are the same price, but one doesn't have more options than the other, they have different options depending on what you want to do. If you change your mind down the road you can always buy the other plug in.

Oh gosh it definitely needs a case. I'll probably end up going with the 2×4 advanced then. I would like for this DSP to pretty much be dedicated to the sub stage so possibly all 4 outputs to subs eventually. But what is the main difference between the two plugins for future reference? I read the descriptions but I have no idea what they mean.

Also, I assume I'm going to need a mic to get the frequency response to be able to edit inside the plugin. Is there a reasonably priced mic you would suggest or could I use the calibration mic that came with my Sony receiver?

To compare the two plugins your best bet would be to look at the datasheets: https://www.minidsp.com/images/documents/Product%20Brief-%202way%20Xover%2021%20ADV%20plug-in.pdf

https://www.minidsp.com/images/documents/Product%20Brief-2x4%20advanced%20plug-in.pdf

The quick difference between the two is the 2x4 can route any input to any output, but the 2.1 advanced has more bands of EQ.

You don't absolutely need a mic for what you want to do, but it certainly would be useful. You can get a UMIK-1 from MiniDSP for $70 when you get the DSP. That's probably your best bet. For simple stuff, your phone and this mic can work well: https://www.parts-express.com/dayton-audio-imm-6-calibrated-measurement-microphone-for-tablets-iphone-ipad-and-android--390-810

I have learned a ton from reading all this. Thanks for sharing. I am hoping to build a big one to replace the 4 12s in my HT system.

Quick question: The signal voltage seems really low on the minidsp. Am I missing something?
