So you have the soft parts of the woofer.

When the soft parts of a woofer are being assembled you take your spider and slide it on the voice coil former where it needs to be.

You then glue the bottom triple joint where the spider meets the voice coil former.

You typically have the bottle of glue in one hand, and you hold the voice coil with the spider attached in the other hand.

You hold the coil with your elbow pointing out in front of your body so that you can rotate the voice coil all 360 degrees in one continuous rotation with no stopping so you have a nice evenly applied glue joint.

When you are laying this bead of glue the tip of the glue bottle is damn near right in the corner of where the 2 pieces meet together.

Then you then spray it with accelerator/activator and that glue joint instantly cures the outside of the glue joint so that the rest of the woofer can be built without a chance of the spiders becoming out of alignment.

So if glue is getting on the voice coil and "burning off" there are some serious problems since its nearly impossible to have glue end up on the voice coil when it is glued together.

Unless your using some kind of glue that breaks the laws of gravity and drips upwards above and past the glue bottle tip.

So you are either A ) overpowering the woofer by massive amount, or B ) clipping the hell out of the woofer.

Chances are most likely B.

The whole "glue on the coil" excuse is something that is not really possible (unless your woofer is built by someone that has no idea what they are doing).

The way you build a woofer your not going to get glue on the voice coil unless your holding the bottle of glue a foot away from the joint your trying to glue........

Once you lay the bead of glue you then apply activator so it cures the outside of the glue joint which will not allow it to drip or run down the voice coil former.

So if it is in fact glue burning, then its glue on the former from the triple joint, which means that your coil has to be so damn hot its effecting glue that can withstand 200+ degrees, and if that is the case your coil has probably already failed completely or has slinkied off the former.

More then likely it is the coil being clipped to death, so that DMM method must work like a champ!

i actually did not use the DMM method..

what happened is it was a brand new sub in a new enclosure.. played for a few mins and then a smell - not sure if it was coil or glue or what,.. no smoke.

i turned it very low and the smell went away , played it more then the amp cut out at a higher volume. turned off deck for 30 secs, turned it on and everything was ok for a min or two then amp cut out again..at this point i turned off deck and did not turn it back on. sub did not sound right the entire time...

next day took sub out of box. Found the nut on the negative terminal on one of the coils on the sub was almost off and the terminal was loose and just flopping around.

So that means only one coil was working... which means that one coil was getting roughly 2k which is too much or what happened is that the smell was created somehow due to the terminal issue. Anyhew... the nut was attempted to be screwed down so the terminal is proper but then the terminal itself broke. Now waiting on a new terminal.

has damage been done... i certainly hope not because its a brand new sub..

on the bright side.. sub was only creating a smell for a minute.. it was not an extended smell or numerous occasion type thing nor was there any smoke...
