What does a spacer ring do?

I was reading online a guy bought a sub that was too big for the box so he used a spacer ring so it'll fit. I get that part. Does a spacer ring do anything else? Does it change the displacement of sub and make the internal volume bigger? For example this box has 2 cub. feet  after displacement and now 2.2 with a spacer ring?

Its going to increase the box volume, but its going to be by a very small amount.  Just how much depends on the dimensions of the spacer ring, but its going to be a small enough change that it will be inconsequential.

So it really serves no purpose at all

Their purpose is to make a sub fit in a box it otherwise would not, which is a pretty important purpose when you need it.

Other than that, it's a ring of wood, what are you expecting it to do, add 10 dB?

Also, im lost on "it was too big to fit, so he used a spacer"..... Id think if it was to large, you would be removing material, unless it was to LONG, and needed to be lifted off the baffle to not hit the rear wall or some shiz......

Normally, its to fit a smaller dim driver, into a larger cut out.... im lost errrrrrywhere....
