BassNewb Posted August 9, 2017 Report Posted August 9, 2017 HI all, I have a 2013 Hyundai Veloster. I am having a bit of a strange problem with my voltage, I can list specs of the system if I need to but this all occurs even with the system not playing and amp cut off. So my voltage when I first start my car is usually around 14.1 - 14.3, and this will usually stay constant, but here recently I've noticed that my voltage will suddenly drop to around 12.4-12.7 or so after the car has been running for an amount time, sometimes it drops very quickly (a few minutes) after being started, sometimes it won't drop at all (after about 30 minutes of driving). I've noticed on very hot days this seems to happen more often and quicker, but it is still very intermittent and not entirely dependent on outside temperature it seems. I will say it is a stock alt with a good battery (XS D3400) up front. Could this be a symptom of an alternator failure to come, or perhaps the voltage being controled by a PCM/ECU in the cars computer? I've checked grounds/connections as well.
WalledSonic Posted August 9, 2017 Report Posted August 9, 2017 PCM-controlled alternator. Welcome to the club. WalledSonic Posted August 9, 2017 Report Posted August 9, 2017 My wife has a 2013 Elantra GT. I'll take a look at the plug this weekend to determine the style. Next step will be to find if anyone has a module to override the PCM controls. BassNewb Posted August 9, 2017 Author Report Posted August 9, 2017 OK sounds good. That's what I thought it was gonna be. So would an externally regulated alternator bypass that?
WalledSonic Posted August 9, 2017 Report Posted August 9, 2017 In theory, yes, but none of the alternator vendors will rewind an internally regulated alternator case with an external regulator.
