Shop is still open - just not at the same location, and Josh is no longer part of it. But even back then, I was just given a nice discount - not really sponsored. With BTL's and IA amps, definitely no sponsor - full price just like anyone else. At Texas Heatwave, I was told SB4 can be sponsored - just can't work for a shop. What kills me is the first time I ran SB4, the rules said "Maximum 32 points", so I could only have (4) 15's. That is why I built with (4) 15's. Now it is "open" consumer, so I may have to rebuild with more subs To me, I would definitely fit SB4 consumer vs. SB5 pro - I built this truck 100% by myself, I drive it everyday to and from work, it goes on family vacations, and it just rolled 120k miles on the way to church Sunday. . .

Yes, those are 40.1's. . .

As of right now, it metered 1.2 dB lower than the MT's for a burp and around 0.7 dB lower playing music, but that was install amps and subs the night before I competed, set gains by ear, and off I went. In the near future, I will strap each pair of 40.1's and run them on the BTL's at 0.5 ohms to see what kind of numbers I can get on the TL. Right now, I have one sub per amp with no strapping. With impedance rise, each 40.1 is running around 1.5 ohms, so I know they are not performing to their full potential. The MT's were running on MD3D's strapped on a 1.5 ohm load (0.7 per amp), so according to the testing I have seen on those amps, each MT was getting 4000+ watts. For metering purposes, it is too bad I never got to compare the two different subs on the same amps. . .

To the ear it is a lot stronger down low playing music, which is pretty much exactly what scott told me would happen with the longer coil. At high volumes and high excursion, the MT's were moving beyond their Xmax, where the BTL's with the longer coil are not.

Three friends that frequently ride in my truck could not understand how it metered lower just listening to music, because of the stronger low end. To me it is like when I went from (2) 18's to (4) 15's. The two setups metered within .3 dB of each other, but believe me when I tell you they were a world of difference listening to music.

My #1 goal, which I achieved, is to be able to hammer on it without the subs heating up or an amp failing. MT's after 30 seconds had the "burning coil" smell and the dust caps were pretty darn hot. I hammered the BTL's full volume almost the entire 20 minute trip home today, and the dust caps were barely warm (and I mean almost unnoticeable), and never a hint of burning voice coil smell at any time (of course I already stated they are getting less power than my MT's were but they are also almost just as loud). I also have a pretty good feeling the 40.1's running a 1+ ohm load will be a lot more reliable than the MD3D's were strapped in pairs on 1 ohm loads.

If I was starting over, I would definitely still change over to the BTL's even if it does not meter as loud with the amps strapped. Playing music at 155 dB with a stronger low end and without fear of anything failing is worth the lower score on the meter. . . .
