SPLdin Posted March 13, 2025 Report Posted March 13, 2025 I have started to research the pros and cons of different types of enclousures. Until now, I have only had ported boxes with different subs. I like how the ported allignment sounds, however I always had to pick a box based on the style of music I wanted to play due to the limited bandwidth from this design. Common knowledge is that 6th orders series tuned allignments offer better bandwidth (when done properly) and can get very loud - even louder than ported. The downside is that they take way more space.. Naturally, a question popped into my head: Which setup will be louder and provide more bandwidth, considering all other variables are equal - amp, electrical, car etc.? A 6th-order box tuned on the low side — 20Hz and 40Hz for two 15s — with volume roughly similar to that of a ported box with four 15s tuned to 27–28Hz? On one hand, the four 15s provide double the motor force and cone area, but on the other hand, the 6th-order is more efficient? Which design would be the better choice?
Joe X Posted March 17, 2025 Report Posted March 17, 2025 Well, provided you have the space for BP6, your answers can be found through modeling software, you can have flat gain for ported as well as a BP6 design, the drivers to be used are also a big factor. Also no point in tuning to 20Hz if your vehicle has a cabin, cabin gain makes unnecessary that low tuning, The rear chamber tuning should be closer to 30Hz and your front chamber should be around the mid 50s to transition to the front stage at least at 60, the front stage usually won't e able to play lower than that. If you can't model find someone that routinely builds 6th BP for advise.
