How I Solder 0/1 Gauge Wire

yes you will need a torch, the reason would be, you have more heat coming from the torch to heat up a larger area, theres no way an iron/gun would be able to heat up that much area long enough for the wire to saturate the solder.

Solder only is unsafe practice. You will find that in more 'important' applications (military, industrial, heavy duty) large conductors are never soldered. The solder acts as a fuse and will sometimes melt before the fuse blasting hot solder all over the place and potentially arcing things out.

If your crimps are coming apart you're either not crimping them right, using crap connectors, or both.

I love to crimp then solder - nice and tight - but I do it for corrosion resistance, not connection quality.

The skin effect has absolutely no application here.
