Some filters (K&N and AiRaid) can be cleaned and they offer cleaning kits to do so. Others can't so they're junked and a new one is bought. Depends on which filter you have....and I'm sure there are others besides those 2, but that's all I can think of at the momment.

And that's not a dumb question, alot of people don't know about that.

The only dumb question is the one you don't ask, cause you'll never find out the answer you need.

on most popular intakes peopel run K&N Filters and pokey is right, they are re-usable filters in which can be cleaned.  But I want to stress something that most people don't realize.  Re-usable filters such as K&N work better when dirty then when clean.  How do I prove this????  Here's some food for thoughts.  How do you flow more air through a paper/fiber filter?

Answer:  Add holes.  Less resistance = increased airflow.  So because of this, is why companies like K&N require their filters to be oiled.  The oil actually makes particles stock to the filter, thus clogging air flow and doing better filtering.  So you have to ask yourself, do you want more airflow (less filtering) or better filtering (less airflow)??
