ZombieswithMustaches Posted January 27, 2009 Report Posted January 27, 2009 So, any suggestions?? I have a 2003 Tahoe and I'm looking to "Meade" it out with comps in the A-pillars. I have RF T-162C in the factory locations and another set of the RF's in some kickpanels, but I really like the idea of the A-pillar comps. So, cut loose and give me some ideas....OH and if anybody has some A-Pillars already made up, that they wanna sell, please let me know! I may jump to a different size if the price is right. Thanks again. Mtgrooves Posted January 27, 2009 Report Posted January 27, 2009 I'm a big fan of the Focal K2 Power Series, they make the 100 KRS shallow mount 4 inch componnets that would be perfect for A pillars. However their on the pricey side of thing like 700 bucks! The Shoe Maker without shoes!
Boon Posted January 27, 2009 Report Posted January 27, 2009 4's tend to be pretty weaksauce, if you do it make sure you cross them over at like 500hz or higher. Personally I would look into something more along the lines of the Atomic 4" Dome Mid (QT4.0) plus a set of nice tweets - the QT 1.3 tweeter is a nice match. They play from 500hz up to 16khz, take 100wrms and sound very very nice. A great way to bring your sound stage up and really improve the quality of the vocal range. If you do that you might want to move/remove the tweeters from your doors/kicks as they will drag the soundstage back down. Low-pass the woofers in the doors and kicks and you'll have good midbass to go with it. You could even just move the Rockford tweets to the a-pillars and add the 4" dome mid. If you just go adding in more sets of components without a good bit of thought you will end up with a really messy soundstage. The reason it works well for Meade is because of those RF 360.2's in the back 10.x volts fo' life!
ptcary Posted January 27, 2009 Report Posted January 27, 2009 Yeah, as long as you are fabbing up some a-pillars, you might as well spend the money on a passive midbass crossover and purchase just the 4" mids, move your tweeters up to the pillar with the new midrange, and you'll have a nice 3-way setup. Biggest difference I ever had in all my years building was going to 3-way front stage, it's pretty remarkable. It gets even better if you go active 3-way, but that's another costly project that requires another amp, and a 3-way crossover or head unit. Doesn't Rockford make a 4" mid? If you search in the fiberglass section, I posted up my pillar build, and it was my first time doing this. It's not hard at all, just be patient. Couldn't I just use the RF crossovers that came with the 6.5's and RF tweeters and then run my second amp to the 4" mids? I would only have the 6.5's, 4" mids, and tweets in the front then. I'll move my other set of 6.5's to the back doors, as they need upgraded anyway. ZombieswithMustaches Posted January 28, 2009 Author Report Posted January 28, 2009 I was looking at the CDT Audio CL 4" comps. Any thoughts??? I, also, found some RF FNQ-2414 4" mids. I'm wanting to buy some pretty soon. The RF's are a little more, but I like the RF's. I've never had CDT's, but I'm open to any thoughts. Yep, if you already got a second amp, you just need to do a pass band crossover, no bass and no tweet.....just midrange going to them. Keep in mind that pillars tend to get loud pretty easily due to their location, so you might find yourself lowering the gains on the amp.
