Neo_frog
I'm thinking about instead of running my 4KWs at 2-ohms across two BLs, instead running each amp at .5 ohms but setting the output voltage to drop 3000W at .5 ohms (38.73VAC) I know this would yield a better response and give me the power I'm looking for, but I'm still not sure how much stress it puts on an amp to run at that load even though I'm setting the gains below RMS @ 1 ohm. I've always impedance matched everything, but I'm looking to experiment with this to have two 4KWs give me 6K output total at either 1-ohm strapped or each amp individually. Does anybody have any info whether this is a bad idea or not? Need an install? Hit me up.[email protected]Got car audio questions? HHR Ed
Lower resistance will do a few things for ya. 1. Higher distortion 2. Less efficiency 3. More heat. also, just because yoy set output at a measured 38v AC, that does not mean you will have 3000w. What will the current be? What is the impedance rise. Usually you will also have a much higher imperdance rise. as well as a higher demand on the electrical. All of this comes down to the law of diminishing returns. Its best to test it but you may lose a few tenths of a dB, sound dirtier, and have less reliability. Neo_frog
I see... Now as far as distortion goes, I'm tuning with an o-scope, have a very strong electrical, and there's a constant thermostat on my amps to monitor changes. I'm hoping it does, but will this stuff even matter? Or is it the signal in the amp that gets ruined? Because I'm doing everything right and I would rather just buy new amps rather than play distortion... Need an install? Hit me up.[email protected]Got car audio questions? HHR Ed
I wouldnt do it. The O-scope helps in tuning, but cant change how the amp will perform. The higher current running through the MOSFETS due to a lower ohm load makes them heat up faster, even at a much lower power output level. They also perform less efeciently. So 1500w output into a .5 ohm load may draw as much power as 2000w output at 1 ohm. And 1500w output into a .5 ohm load may have the same distortion level as 3000w output at 1 ohm. Those numbers arent exact but just an example. Not much you can do with tuning, its just that the amp's S/N ratio will be lower and THD will be higher. Neo_frog
Thanks HHR. That's exactly the info I needed. I'm still learning, so this helps out a lot. I'll just continue as planned originally. Need an install? Hit me up.[email protected]Got car audio questions?
