Check c:\windows\system32\ and see if explorer.exe is there. I'm a system administrator for the Marine Corps and your problem (only because I'm not there to see it) sounds like it needs it. It takes a while, but it's a failsafe and 95% guaranteed to fix most problems. EDIT: Ah, didn't read all the posts. Seems you're getting it worked out.
