Box Types Sealed Or Ported

Right now im using two sealed boxs for my four 12s.... two subs r faceing the trunk and two are facing up at the trunk.... first i was thinking about facing all four up at the trunk but sided not to... was waiting to get a custom box for all four.... im really not to sure if i should go woth a tuned ported box or keep it sealed... as is it easly hits 145+ db but want more.. at max power the subs already look like they want to come out of the box.. i already blow a speaker out of one of the boxes before but just got another sealed box.........will ported give me any more dbs???

in theory a ported box should always give u more decibels as it allows pressure from the front and rear of the cone to be utilized.

however if ur subs are wanting to jump out of the box then they might not be able to handle that kind of power in a correctly sized ported enclosure.

and also since its in a trunk it will be difficult to get a box big enough for 4 12's in a trunk (depending on vehicle of course)

ported enclosures are more efficient as far as power handling too, less power for same output, but they limit the amount of power that the subs can handle before reaching their mechanical limits.

so in short ported has the potential to be better but there are so many limiting factors that may hurt the output if u switch to ported. best way to find out is try it

X2 there because it seems obvious how much the ported boxes rely just as much on the outside air space as inside cu ft. I can always tell when my ported box has somehow come loose and isn't all the way to the front of the trunk (up against the seat with the speakers & ports firing backwards). it seems to just suck up all the air and ignite it.

i was actually looking into venting my trunk even, to allow more airflow.

having just installed my first sealed box this afternoon, i must say i am pleased. its not relying so much on airflow and its giving me the deep sound i like. i haven't been able to crank it up yet and see if my hairs tingle, but i don't see why not.

that is the only reason i would go ported, if you weren't getting enough hair tingling bass. sounds like the 4 speakers you got are doing fine as is.

^^^I went from sealed to ported for my 2 12s. They are a far way from being HX2s, but hx2s were out of my price range when i bought my setup. My sealed box was alright, i built it a bit bigger than needed. It was my first one, i messed up, built it big enough to be ported but left it sealed. So it was 4.4 cubes sealed, then ported it and tuned it to 35 hz, now i got 5 cubes tuned to 30. I have noticed a HUGE difference between the sealed and ported. But i also have a Blazer, so getting my box in and out is easy. that elantra may be a bit of a bitch to get a ported box for 4 12s in and out.
