cvxsmitty58 Posted May 9, 2009 Report Posted May 9, 2009 As of now i am running the stock infinity gold amplifier in my jeep to all the speakers, including infinity kappas in the rear doors......i just bought a 2 ch. 760 watt sony amp from a buddy real cheap and i was thinkin about amping the rear doors since the kappas can handle a moderate amount of power....my question is, will this be too much power for the kappas , and will this intern make my front speakers louder because of less power needed for the rear speakers. Also how will the sq be coming from the sony amp. Thanks guys
audiofanaticz Posted May 9, 2009 Report Posted May 9, 2009 It depends on the amps power you bought. It being made by sony you might as well cut the power in 3rds, because the amp will only do 1/3rd of the power it claims to do.. As for the kappas, I have no idea what speakers models they are so no idea how much power they can take, but then again being from the sony you probolly wont have enough power to fry them... As for making your other speakers louder since your not running the kappas off the stock/factory amp, this is hit or miss. Depending on how many channel the factory amp is, the kappas may have their own channel, so if thats the case your other speakers wont become louder since its not powering them. If the rear speakers are just spliced in with the others on the factory amp, it will lower the ohm resulting in the amp producing more power, removing the speakers to power them with the sony amp will raise the impedance back up making the amp not work as hard and making it quieter. In my opinion re wiring everything for some cheap amp is not worth it, most likely you wont see any gains in volume or sound quality by any means with the sony amp. If anything you will notice is that you will be able to cross the kappas over better. Your better off going and getting a nice 4 channel amp that is 100wrms by 4channels at 4 ohms -or- 160wrms by 4channels at 4 ohms. Id think the sundown 160.4 would be a noticable upgrade with noticable power increase, and sq since they run a very nice crossover. Then just use the sundown or whatever REAL or DECENT 4 channel amp to power all your mid/tweets, and not even bother with your factory/stock amp.
cvxsmitty58 Posted May 9, 2009 Author Report Posted May 9, 2009 there kappa 62.9i's and they handle 75 rms. There listed as 2 ohms. As for the amp, it claims to be 190 rms x2 at 2 ohms. i know its sony so i figure probably 120-140 is more realistic. Only reason im doing this is cuz i hate when people in the back seat say i cant even hear the music....when in the front seat its clear as day. I figure the factory amp is only pushin 30-40 rms....dont know if the rears have a channel of their own
audiofanaticz Posted May 9, 2009 Report Posted May 9, 2009 It may do about 110 - 120ish rms of clean or cleaner power. I dont think the amp is no where near effient as a decent brand. Also if these are your rear speakers back by your subs the extra power wont really help them too much, I think they will still be drowned out a lot from the bass. If anything if those are your nicest speakers you got and thats why you want to amp them, I say move them into the front if the size is same and then swap the current front speakers into the back and keep that ran of the factory amp, and amp your front stage. This is where the added power will make the most difference.
cvxsmitty58 Posted May 10, 2009 Author Report Posted May 10, 2009 ive thought about that but, being a highschool student......getting a good high quality amp is kindof outta the question unless i can get one cheap somewhere......as far as amping the front stage i really dont need it cuz the tweeters are up on the dash and fairly loud and the doors are just 6x9 subs which barely put out anything with a hpf on.....what if i got some 6x9s and built boxes for them off the sub box in the back and amped them up there.....my real question here is how can i get more sound in the back seat without doing anything drastic such as putting more speakers in the door or on the b pillar?
