There's a couple of subs out there that actually recommend running only 1 coil when used in a sealed box - DLS Iridiums are one from memory. You can change the Q of the sub by using 2 coils, 1 coil, or 1 coil with the other coil shorted out.

Its bad for the woofer to use only 1 coil.

Wrong. . .

You can use one coil. Just short the other one and the t/s parameters remain almost the same.

Kicker Warhorse runs one coil at a time on a woofer - one coil pushes, the other pulls. They short the coil that is not being driven. t/s parameters of the woofer are almost the same, and back EMF is not thrown back into the amplifier.

Current system:

1997 Blazer - (4) Customer Fi NEO subs with (8) American Bass Elite 2800.1s

Previous systems:

2000 Suburban - (4) BTL 15's and (4) IA 40.1's = 157.7 dB at 37 Hz.

1992 Astro Van - (6) BTL 15's and (6) IA 40.1's = 159.7 dB at 43 Hz.

imo dont do it theres no point in getting a dvc sub if you going to go threw the trouble of shorting it out or whatever just get a svc and be done with it

can you do it physically..sure. should you do it...absolutely not.

running off 1 coil changes the T/S parameters and completely changes how the sub will perform. you will usually get a muddy, sloppy bass performance out of it.

its a waste of time and equipment. dont do it

thats a big negative.

Its bad for the woofer to use only 1 coil.

Unless 1 coil is already gone making the speaker pratically junk.

as for the driver reaching its proper xmax, that relies mostly on power, and box.

A bigger box with 500wrms will reach full xmax before the same sub in a smaller box with the same power.

Again thats a big negative.

You can do it and it does run just fine. You can either short out the other coil, or you can actually connect a tune pot to it and change the Q of the sub at will.

Very good write up about this topic.
