Voice Coil Wire Size?

Recommended Posts

I was just comparing my Fi BTL to my Fi BL and noticed that the wire used on the BL looks larger.... Seems to me the BTL would have larger wiring for the coil since it can handle double the power.....

Just thought it was interesting.... what do you guys think?

The first pic is the BL. Both of the subs are fully loaded.

the bl is using flatwound and the btl is using round wire.

if you have a round wire, and you put it next to another wire you can see some space between them= not a lot of surface area.

If the wire is thinner , the space is smaller=bigger surface area=better cooling.

I think that's why they use a thinner wire.

Thinking is the root of all problems...

i know what the website says and maybe i am wrong but that sure does not look like flatwound which does not make it any better or worse but i am thinking also the bl is an aluminum coil and the btl is a copper coil.

do you mean the wire itself on the BL is aluminum? I guess that could explain why it is larger....

An aluminum alloy is less efficeint conductor versus a copper alloy. Copper can handle the same power at a smaller size of an aluminum wire, thats why KnuKonceptz CCA is oversized to hold about the same amperege versus their OFC lines.

Its all about the ohms

The winding company can use different size/shaped wire of different lengths to achieve a certain voice coil resistance.

Some wires are fat and short, some are thin and long. If you have a single 4ohm driver the coil will probably be long an skinny for good surface area, whereas an 8 layer Dual 2ohm coil is actually a Quad 4ohm coil wired in parallel under the dustcap so the wires used in that application may be shorter and thicker.

It all depends on application

**Looking again, the BTL pic could very well be a small gauge flat wound coil, keep in mind the overall coil height as well will change depending on the gauge of wire used to reach a certain coil option
