1999 Durango- Two 15" L5s Build Up

The glued was dried this morning so I went ahead and fiberglassed the top edge of the amp rack. Wasn't going to at first because I didn't have gloves and the brush I have isn't as good because I had fiberglassed with it before so it was sorta stiff even though I left it in Acetone.

Still have lots of sanding to do and some fiberglassing, inside the box.

Do you guys think this is a bit over kill for two 15" L5s?? Im thinking it is but over kill is a good thing I guessStill have lots of sanding to do :-[

Predrilled the holes for where the amp will go and the wires.

I'm also done fiberglassing. In total I used 3 quarts, not bad (i would say). I was done fiberglassing the inside and the amp rack so the remaining fiberglass I had I didn't want it to go to waiste so I threw a small layer of it ontop of the box and inside. I did most of the fiberglassing by hand! Wearing gloves of course. The acetone I bought wasn't getting all the fiberglass off the brushes so I ended up getting 3 brushes hard and not useable so I just did most of it by end. It's much easier and less of a mess with a brush though.

Next thing I have to do is sand sand sand. Then test to see how it sounds. If we like it then we go ahead and lay the vinyl, then it's officially complete. :^

Didn't take any pictures because there isn't really any difference...I sanded all of the outside and it's pretty smooth.Inside I sanded as much as possible. I also siliconed some things here and there just to ensure that there aren't any tiny gaps.All that's left is testing it and covering up the box.

Went ahead and spray painted the ports black-

and then I attempted to put the vinyl on...This is the last time I work with vinyl! :R Not easy to work with. Any minor bumps go right thru it. Next time I'll try to keep the fiberglass inside the enclosure if im going to use vinyl. Plus it wrinkles up easily unlike carpet.

Well, you never vinyl bare wood, especially rough wood, you either carpet the wood, or use some fabric foam, or  just really bondo/body filler the hell out of that box till its smooth, and all rough edges are rounded

Try again, with either a carpeted box, or the 1/2"- 1" foam lined on the box

Also, Iam like you when I build boxes, I always let the wood over lay the other board when they meet. I glue it, nail it, then screw it, then after that edge is done, or the box is done, I use my router with the flush cut bit, and go over all uneven edges, and the box comes out very nice and square, and no needing for sanding the edges at all. If you dont have one, they are well worth the $60 (cheapy) $120 for a descent one, best investment next to a large table- table saw. You can perfect round edges, make templates, and re-use them over and over again, so there is no variances in your popular builds, you can cut perfect circles, the proper Square speaker hole cut out as well  ;-)  I know I have scrwed up that damn L5 cut out a few times before I got it right. I had no idea, the corners on the L5/L7, Hifonics Atlas were rounded corners, not 90deg corners
