Question about woofer suspensions?

Question for you subwoofer experts, Looking at Steve's lastest vids of a new BTL, when he is pushing in the cone of the driver, he is putting some mighty down pressure, and the cone hardly moves. What does this mean? I've seen/had some drivers that are VERY EASY to push in (Brand new), and some "KINDA" hard to push in (Fi BL) Those BTL's look VERY STIFF! I've always wanted a driver like that for some reason. Does anyone know if the AQ HDC3 "A"'s are as stiff as the BTL, or no? Thanks

the spiders are the "suspension"

some subs have 2 stiff spiders, some have 2 soft and a stiff spider, some have 1 stiff spider, etc, etc.

they work in conjunction with motor strength to control cone movement.

if you recone a woofer with different spiders than what came in it originally, it will usually change the characteristics of the sub (ie: how low it drops, etc)

the AQ's are stiff but i can't honestly say that i have a memory for how much pressure i had to use to move them compared to btls

so to answer your question, how "stiff" a sub is depends on the spiders used.

I have always wondered the same thing. My old Kickers have always been very easy to move but I have a very old Pro series Pyle and it's very hard to move. I also used to have some Punch SP415 15s that were kinda in the middle, harder than the Kickers but nat as hards as the Pyles.

HU: Pioneer

Highs: 2X 4X6"s, 2X 3.5"s, 4X 5.25" comps, Q-Logic kicks, and a Sundown SAX-125.2

Subs: 4 Nightshade 15s and Strapped SAZ-3500Ds <---Sundown FTW good.gif

Electrical: dual DC Power 320s (ordered) and 2 D3400s up frt and 4 D2700s in the back

after being used on several amps my hdc3 takes more force than you would expect to move it

are your HDC3's the aluminum coil? Just wondering if it makes a difference from the 4layer copper vs the 8layer alum?????

the HDC's are the copper coils and the HDC-A's are the aluminum coils. i think the aluminum coils can take alot more power and cool off faster. im not sure if thats 100% correct...

Yeah, a friend of mine had 4 in a wall with an Autotek 7600 back in 88. He's the one that got me into car audio.
