what is a "big 3"

i searched and nothing came up, maybe im just incapable of searching well enough, but i thought id ask anyway. im still new to this but im trying to learn. what exactly is the "big 3" i know it has to do with the wiring, but i dont understand its benefits and exactly what it does.

sorry in advance, im a noob and i figured someone here could successfully explain it to me.
