Cash for clunkers

Here is another thought for you people....

Back in December to February (not sure exactly when and I don't feel like looking it up) there were a few states that were trying to get congress to pass a new tax called the mileage tax (or something alone the line). Every vehicle would be taxed by the mile instead of being taxed by gallon of fuel. This so called mileage tax was to be put in place because the government wasn't getting enough money from the tax on fuel. Why wasn't the goverment making enough on the fuel tax.... because new cars get better gas mileage. So now that the CFC has been such a success the goverment is going to get even less income form the tax on fuel.

The mileage tax was shot down because the economy the in the shitter in the beginning of the year. Now that the economy has picked up some....look for this new tax in the near future.

Interesting....whenever you have some time I would like to see something on that....How could they even enforce it???? Make you go to shop and get it checked for mileage? Doesn't seem practical

Look bottom line is, that it did what it was design to do!! No way to argue that.

Of course, not trashing anyone specifically, just the only liberal that replies its cool though, if it were the other way around I'd gang up on the outsider too. It is interested to hear these arguments.

Question: Who agrees on more regulation for banks who started this mess, car companies that can't see the trend of the country, etc., etc. so we don't have another recession similar to this one?

Yea it did what it was meant to do, it took a bunch of debters of a debter nation and gave them more debt.

I know that I am not trying to gang up on you bro it is just we don't see eye to eye on this subject. I am just having a discussion with everyone on this thread about this topic. I have some liberal views and I guess some conservative views, but I don't think of them as one or the other they are just my views that I have on the topics that I have info on. But that doesn't meant that I think I have all the info that is why I enjoy these sort of discussions, makes me see more than just my view on something. It helps me grow and learn or help someone else do the same.

Yes I agree that big business and large banking should not just be able to do what they want. The only reason being, that they are such big entity's that they can set nation wide trends good and bad. Or we as the people just need to set an example of one of the people that hurts us (people like Bernie Madoff), lets bring back public hangings and stoning IMO. To hell with this if you have enough money you get off or just go to a posh jail.

Yes the economy is at a low right now, will this "cash for clunkers" help, probably not. But for anyone to believe that liberal crap about destroying houses next you have got to be the biggest idiot alive. Not to offend anyone but this program is designed for a quick boost while they figure out what the hell to do next and it is getting people out purchasing new vehicles and spending money in the local economy (at the hometown dealers).

The Obama administration is not doing a great job (YOU CAN SAY THAT AGAIN!) (stimulating the economy, not all of which is their fault. We are fighting a two front war and going thru a minor "depression" if you will. At this point anything that can help produce jobs and stabilize the economy is great. Toyota has plants here and Americans assemble the vehicles, yes it is a foreign owned company but so is Dodge/Chrysler. Either way it goes dealership employees are getting paid and service departments are getting more work (paid warranty repairs) thus putting more money in American's pockets.

The economy will only get better when people are no longer afraid to spend money. Articles like these are used as scare tactics and do more damage than good.

Ok... I am still dragging this up. I got an email the other day and the numbers look good!!:

A clunker vehicle at 15 mpg and 12,000 miles per year uses 800 gallons a year of gasoline.

A more fuel efficient vehicle at 25 mpg and 12,000 miles per year uses 480 gallons a year.

So, the average clunker transaction will reduce US gasoline consumption by 320 gallons per year.

They claim 700,000 vehicles – so that's 224 million gallons / year.

That equates to a bit over 5 million barrels of oil.

5 million barrels of oil is about ¼ of one day's US consumption.

And, 5 million barrels of oil costs about $350 million dollars at $75/bbl.

So, we all contributed to spending $3 billion to save $350 million..

How good a deal was that ?

They'll probably do a great job with health care though, right?

btw... how many of the dealerships around you guys still have these sitting in their parking lots?

I know that the majority of the dealers in my town STILL haven't gotten any money from the government for these cars yet.

And... you people STILL in favor of this REALLY think it only cost $3,500-4,500 per car? I'm sure that there weren't committees with gobs of overpaid people appointed, there weren't new computer systems that had to be installed by technicians, software engineers creating all new software to keep up with all of the paperwork, new buildings to house all of the people who will input the data, the government didn't "have" to get specially certified truck drivers to pick up the dead vehicles, sign off of the paperwork, get their union breaks, and pull around trailers full of dead vehicles with their diesel trucks blowing black smoke....

Is this the CHANGE? Looks like big business big government to me..... Meet the new boss- same as the old boss.

theres way too much shit to read in this thread.. anyways i work at the dealership as you guys know.. we sold around 150 new cars due to the cash for clunker deal.. and after the deal.. we're still giving 3500 dollars on shitty trade in's.. we havn't been this busy in a few years... the cars usually come off the hauler.. and they sit on the lot for a day.. and there gone.. and then it starts over.. we're selling about 45 cars a WEEKEND ... we think it's great

I am glad you guys are making money off of the backs of non-willing taxpayers. I know my local places are STILL sitting on the same cars and are starting to get really really pissed.
