Bass Knob = Less Power?

So a buddy of mine did some tests on his Sundown SAZ-3000D with an O-scope and said that when the bass knob was plugged in it actually decreased the total output.

The total calculation came out to about 800 watts less and it was audible too.

My question is do any amp gurus out there know why that could be the case and if the Rockford amps are the same?

Wouldnt be thehoe92 without teh purple

This is probably a stupid question but is he sure the knob wasn't turned down?

I never use bass boost or plug in my bass knobs for SPL, as they will actually decrease the score.

Amps usually have a sweet spot of signal input voltage. Anything over can be too clipped, or just too much for the amp to operate efficiently at.

Bass boost increases the signal input voltage into the input stage of the amp.

So if your amp's sweet spot is 2.5v for example, and your headunit is a 2.5v pre-amp output. And your gain is set on the amp to the proper sensitivity, Then the bass boost is just overdriving the amp and putting maybe 3.5v input for example.

sooo i thought if you turned the bass remote all the way up and then set the gains with a dmm you would end up with the same output....

No, leave all x-overs flat, no boost. Bass boosts at 45hz on a 12db per octave slope usually. Leave it off.

Then set your gains to optimal level for your peak clean head unit volume.

Bass boost could be used for songs that have the low end lacking, or if you are playing at a lower volume level but wanna boost up the low end.

NOT, if you are playing at full or near full level with songs that have good bass, or tones.

My amps have a gain knob instead of bass boost. I would think that wouldn't affect you negatively like bass boost would it?

gain is different. Gain is input sensitivity. Basically it matches the sensitivity of the amp to the voltage of the pre-outs on the head unit.

Basically, full gain could be a sensitivity setting of .2v, and gain fully down will set it to a sensitivity of 8v. So if your headunit puts out 4v clean signal, you would have the gain set somewhere in the middle.

i suppose it depends on what amp and what function the knob actually controls.... i just got my aq2200d today... and the manual says that the knob controls the "level" whatever that means... and it also has a clipping light on it... sooo.... im wondering just exactly what my knob does...lol... and its kinda weard... the max is on the left and min is on the right so you have to turn it counter clockwise to turn it up...

and i also have a question about the clip light thing... could this be used to get a pretty good idea on where the gains should be? does it pretty much be the same as an oscope except you dont see the waves?

that makes sense Ed thanks.

I heard Rockford has a different type of "boost" so I was also wondering whats the deal with that since the sundown got me questioning if I would be louder without the knob.

some say that Rockford amps won't even work without the knob plugged in.
