I never thought about using it for this application but I do it all the time when drilling holes when I don't want the surface to get marred.

I have done it with vinyl, it has to be the good 3m stuff and just really push down on it to get good adhesion, go slow with the bit, give it a try on some scrap you have around...

Thanks guys I'm also thinking about just glueing it but I'm afraid that it might not be strong enough.

If you use 3M Super 77 spray adhesive, don't worry about it...that stuff is strong as shit!

No I mean glueing the top to the box and not using screws at all.

Like I said not sure how strong it would be though.

No, don't do that. Do it like this....

Mark and predrill the screw holes for the top. Use a countersink bit after you predrill the holes so the head of the screw will be slightly below the surface of the wood. Screw the top on to the box and then fill in the screw holes (on top of the screw heads) with wood filler. Let it dry and then sand smooth. Then wrap the top, you can use a sharp blade to cut the material to a straight edge after it dries. This way you'll end up with a secure top piece on your box with a smooth suede cover on top w/no screw holes visible!

I thought the edges of the suede would need to wrap around the edge of the wood to keep from being able to see the edge of the fabric.

Hmm, maybe you could scribe out a border or line where you want to material to "wrap around" and tuck it in the void, if that makes sense.
