What's Protection Mode?

Recommended Posts

Yes, I've been around audio stuff for years, but I'm just now getting into car audio and the high end power stuff. Would someone mind explaining to me in simple terms, what it means when an amp goes into protection mode?

it means the amp senses a problem and instead of giving u a smoke show it just goes into protect. however it is NOT something u should rely on as a failsafe. its basicly a mode that says hey im on but im not gonna do any work

protection mode is a technology built into alot of amps that shuts the amp off when something that can harm the amp is happening. whether it be low battery voltage, too low of speaker impedance, a short in the wire somewhere, or other dangerous things.

edit: beat me to it ^^.

So...lets say I'm pounding away one day, and all of a sudden, my bass drops off and/or shuts off. Does that mean the amp just performed a ragequit (protect mode) and "shut off" or what?

This is a proposed situation.

or low voltage

I've yet to see my car's voltage drop dramatically. Remember, this is just a proposed situation. Didn't happen. Just curious as to what this "mode" was.
