siucsaluki11 Posted September 18, 2009 Report Posted September 18, 2009 What are the advantages of going to the composite cones? About how much extra is it? Is it more for cosmetics or is it for performance? Does it change the way the sub plays? Im guessing it will change the moving mass since its a different material. I searched a lil but i couldnt find much info, so i figured id ask. loburbon Posted September 19, 2009 Report Posted September 19, 2009 composite cones are stronger and lighter then the regular cones. it's an expensive upgrade, but worth it if your going to be pushing the subs hard. if not then it's not really worth the cost unless you want the looks. siucsaluki11 Posted September 19, 2009 Author Report Posted September 19, 2009 about how much more per woofer? I figure i could always get the standard cones and if anything ever goes wrong i can recone them with composite cones. audiofanaticz Posted September 19, 2009 Report Posted September 19, 2009 Not to mention the composite cone gives has a lesser pitch, giving you more of a flat cone. When you look at most woofers you see the cone comes straight down to the spiders, With the composite cones (depending on the woofer size) you have about .75-1.25 inches between the spider and the bottom of the cone. Some say it changes the sound of the woofer, but I cant notice anything really. Also the cones are reusable, so if you ever need a recone all you need is the surround, spider, coil. Im a Dealer, but cant give pricing on them over the internet, you would have to call your local dealer or DD direct. But there are 3 different types of composite cones (yellow kevlar like what is on the old 9900series woofers, with no reinforement, then the colored composite cones, and the straight up carbon fiber cones) 9918 with kevlar cone 9518s (composite cone) / 9918 Reinforments on the kevlar composite cones Quote
audiofanaticz Posted September 19, 2009 Report Posted September 19, 2009 I think youll be fine with a standard cone DD. Just upgrade to a carbonfiber dustcap. They come in many different sizes (4.5inch for the 1508s, 5.6inch, 6.5inch, and 8inch which are on my 9518s). The dustcap alone will stiffing up the standard cone a lot!! DD also has a newer paper cone they are using with some sort of reinforcement on the back side. Ive seen it on the 2500 series and 95Z series we have in the shop, tho it looks like the 1500 series is still the standard paper cone. Im really not sure if it adds rigity to the cone or not. Been meaning to ask everytime I talk to Brad, but I keep forgetting! In the past, Ive had 2 DD3515s, powered by 2 dirrrrrty audiobahn hct2300 amps something like 2400wrms of pur clipped power. The subs are now in my buddies car and still holding up. So I guess the cones are a great upgrade if your a baller and want something cool and different looking, or if you have a lot of back pressure, or lots of power and you keep folding cones. Quote

siucsaluki11 Posted September 19, 2009 Author Report Posted September 19, 2009 Thanks guys, i think for the time being ill plan on just going with the regular cones with the CF dustcap. I dont imagine it too expensive of an upgrade. And i cant remember if when i called my local dealer if the price i was given was with or without them. audiofanaticz Posted September 20, 2009 Report Posted September 20, 2009 (edited) Well the largest (8inch) carbon fiber dust cap is way under $65 MSRP, cant give out exact prices, so Im high ballin them a good bit And depending on how you got it with your dealer like if your a returning customer, he can give you a nice break on pricing. Any other info, just ask me, or even bourbin, he knows a bit about teh products too EDIT: Just noticed your in CHI? Im in Sheboygan Wi, under 3 hours from you. Depending on what your looking for I could hook you up nice, but you would have to drive here. Edited September 20, 2009 by Bangin Caddy Quote
