Noobie needs help

So...

im new to the car audio world

well sort of...

i've studied blueprints of boxes that people made and what not but never fully understood anything till i took a drafting and construction tech class.

the box i plan on build are for dual subs

its ported

the subs are 2 15" alpine type r's

im running them to a 5k watt amp from Boss audio

the box is going into a small suv dont know what yet but its prolly gunna be a blazer or a explorer.

if anyone can give me tips on like how thick the wood should be and what material i can build my box with i'd appreciate it.

if im missin anything to get help let me know i'll try to clear it up some more

Go to the Members build/ Build section and look at all the builds that are close to what your doing...Yes you'll have to do some major looking around but it beats doing it wrong the first time out. 3/4" should be the smallest you ever use for a sub enclosure. Look at the technics used for bracing, sealing, porting, wiring and such they may differ from what you learned in school.

yea i usually use 3/4 mdf and double up on the baffle (side where the subs go)so that its 1 1/2. i would also get some wood dowels from home depot and run one horizontal and 1 vertical just to be safe. you should be ok with that, but extra never hurts. alot of people like to use fiber glass to add some strength. theres alot of different ways. just look stuff up and see what you like best. overkill can be good but not enough can reeeaaallly suck

Ye like what im learning is way different than what im starting to work on.

You can also use birch plywood for making a box, its stronger and lighther than MDF but more expensive.

Im sort of on a low budget but tryin to get the best boom for the buck.

since our economy sucks and im jobless i thought if i can be good at making boxes i could have a small business in my lil town in north carolina.

Get 3/4" MDF to make the box out of, then just double baffle the face of the box where the subs will be mounted to. For internal bracing just use standard dowels, going top to bottom and another side to side. Put them in the place most prone to flex on the box, spot furthest away from the edges(middle of the walls).

As far as building boxes locally, you can make a decent amount of extra $$ on the side but doing so requires a lot of word of mouth to get your name out there. Plus having good quality building skills and showing previous work you've done to potential customers. After you get started just make sure to balance your time and don't get overloaded with work, happens to a ton of people.

ye like im now starting to think about building a series of boxes.

i have a single 15" closed box already built but people now a days just want dual subs which i guess is the new trend.

also what about single cab trucks and vehicles with very little trunk space...

is it easier to build a box for shallow subs than it is for regular subs?

Always heard marine grade birch or mdf is best. Use at least 3/4". Double up on your baffle. And don't forget to round the inside corners of your box. Just my two cents...

There is no need to round the inside edges of the box as wave at such low frequencies would not even notice it. All you are doing is making your enclosure volume smaller which is not desired.
