newls1
For a HDD, I'd go the SSD route, and like a 64GG or 128GB SSD would work VERY WELL and VERY FAST. Not sure on the interface that HDD uses to talk with the motherboard, but hopefully it is SATA and not IDE. As for memory, the MAX that motherboard can handle is 1GB (I googled your model and that was what I came up with) If that is true, then all you can really do is this: Get 1 of these if you only have 1 memslot ( http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx...N82E16820231141 ) or 2 of these if you have 2 mem slots ( http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx...N82E16820145502 ) Either of these option will give you 1GB ram, which is the max your board can handle........ I think I have 2 512MB ram sticks, hit me up if you want a deal... Personally thats about all you can do with that model, and I wouldn't really even do this. This is an older model, VERY SLOW CPU, and a VERY WEAK built in GPU. For $500 you could get a decent notebook, which will be MUCH faster then what your going to upgrade..... The only thing that would REALLY MAKE A HUGE difference is a SSD type HDD. Those are crazy fast, and really make a huge difference that would be VERY noticeable. z71kris
what he said /\ for most part....buying a new lappy for about 500 would be the best option, you can find them on newegg for that much if you search you can find great deals there...if you buy a vista box, minimum I would buy would be 1 gig RAM, 2 gigs is preferable, if it is windows 7, 1 would suffice, but 2 would be better...like check this....http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx...N82E16834147997... HP 3 gig ram, 250 gig HDD, 499 with free shipping..after you upgrade your ram, and HDD you will be into it for 200-400 any ways, so splurge the extra 1-200 and get a new one that will put the old one to shame even after upgrading it...or even this one for 399 with free shippinghttp://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx...N82E16834115666 Edited October 13, 2009 by z71kris Quote 03 GMC Sierra Z71 Ext Cab l 2 15" American Bass XO's l 1 Lanzar HTG2600 l AudioVox 1510D In dash DVD l KnuKonceptz Wiring l Big Three Done with KnuKonceptz KLMX 1/0 l Infinity Reference 6022si 6-1/2" Front Door Speakers l Upgraded to 145A Alt from 105A Alt l Custom Box 2^3 under the rear bench with resined bottom, and about 4 lbs of polyfill

Reason being is simple........The 3GB is just a sales catch that makes the customer "THINK" that since 3 is higher then 2 then 3 MUST BE FASTER, BULLSHIT. Unless that notebook is using a Corei7 1366 skt (EXTREMELY NOT GOING TO BE THE CASE) then the ram is operating in single channel mode so bandwidth is starved and capped to around 2500mb/s give or take. With the 2GB notebooks there using 2 1GB sticks in DUAL CHANNEL so memory bandwidth automatically doubles to atleast 5000mb/s give or take. 2GB will be noticeably smoother then 3GB. 3GB is just a selling point for the dumb and stupid (oops, i mean the LESS savy people ) Not arguing with you, but either way you look at it, VISTA NEEDS AT LEAST 2GB to run somewhat smooth, even though it will work with 1GB, or 512MB, it caches the local HDD/s for ever and REALLY slows everything down. VISTA should have never been installed on a notebook LOL! Notebooks (for the most part) use VERY slow HDD's like 4200rpm/5400rpm, and just isn't practical for todays OS'es. I bought a gateway notebook 1 1/2 years ago on newegg for 235$ brand new. Has a 17" LCD, Core2 1.6GHz dual core CPU, and it came with 1gb ram. FOr the money you couldnt go wrong. I put 2GB ram in it (now dual channel) and a SSD HDD 60GB OCZ, son-of-a-bitch FLEW! blazing difference, only AFTER I INSTALLED WIN7 of course. I had XP64 on it, but really wanted to try WIN7 out (at that time) everything is just smooth as a baby's ass...... To the OP, there are great deal on newegg, you just have to be fast with the mouse button to get them and or find them. Just the other day, there was a 15.4", 2GB ram, Dual Core Intel pentium, and XP64 pre installed (business class notebook) for 299$ excellent buy, should have jumped on it. Nirvalica
I don't think the OP would really need a SSD. He doesn't seem like he is really in the market for performance computing. I think a regular disk HD would work fine for him. I know one thing that I dislike about the laptop I bought is the touch pad. I didn't try before I bought, and I sort of regret it (although I did get an excellent deal on it, so I can forgive myself). But I would go and try a bunch at best buy or something and find one you like the feel of. Then check out sites like newegg or tiger direct for the best price. Sites like that will usually have a bunch of the same model of laptop, but with different components inside. So if you like the look and feel of one at best buy, but the price and features inside aren't there, you can probably find what you want online. Quote My Youtube Page. SSD's are getting very affordable now, so why do you think the OP doesnt need one? if the price of a 7200rpm 200gb notebook harddrive is 150, and a 60GB SSD is 120, even though the SSD is smaller in "SPACE SIZE" the performance advantage is HUGE, every notebook needs an SSD. No moving parts, no heat, less power consumption, a 100% win win situation for the notebook class.
