quick question

Ok..i didnt know where to post this so i did it here but ya..my question is about the bass knob..i just want to know what does it actually do..does it act like a gain or does it help tune into a frequency or what..i kinda want one just because of steve but i want to know what it does first

there are a couple types of knobs

standard

tunable

gain

standard is normally set to 40-45 hz and when you turn it up it essentially increases the note volume which in turn brings the rest of the bass notes up a tad. i dont like them. makes everything sound ba if used

tunable is a knob similar to the standard but it allwas you to choose your frequency (range of like 30-45)

gain is by far the best. when you turn it the gain on your amp goes up. this however can lead to you popping subs if you arent careful but the others ones will too. just in a less obvious way

Ok maybe i wont get a bass knob..at least not till i get a job and can buy more subs if i blow one..but thanks for the info

i may be a litle off on some things tho. but i think the basic idea is there

they just arent the best for your subs

If it's the bass knob that COMES with the amp, it can't hurt anything if used correctly. The ones that comes with some amps act just as the Gain does, even with the knob turned all the way up, it does not surpass your gain, and actually sends a smaller reading to your amp because it has more resistance (I think that's how you word it?). Which means this acts different than bass boost does on your amp because it's making all notes that is being played through your sub louder not just a certain note like bass boost (which is 45hz on most amps IIRC) So as long as you have your gains set correctly on your amp, a bass knob (that comes with your amp) will not harm your equipment.

Sorry if I am wrong about this, just woke up & kind of half asleep still. But I doubt I am wrong.

There was a topic some where on this site about them that I read a while back (I'll look for it when I wake up more). And in the topic the discussion was pretty much about this just asking about them, and a lot of people replied back on it pretty much just how I did, that it wasn't a set freq that it was after, and that it worked just like your gain did. Only reason I really remember that part was that somebody mentioned about it is that when you have the knob hooked up, it's sending a smaller signal or something to the amp and if you want to be right before clipping, set your gain so you are barely clipping, then hook up the knob and check if you are clipped which you shouldn't be because the knob sends a little smaller of a signal to the amp. But all the knob really does is act like a quick way to control the Gain on your knob from the front seat without going back to where your amp is and turning it.

From my own experiences testing the knob before I got rid of my truck & my 10s, I unhooked the knob from my amp, and I could tell a small difference on the subs playing louder (tested it because I read that somewhere on here a longish time ago). Another test I did was moving the bass boost knob on the amp around while having the bass knob hooked up and turned all the way up & from what I could hear the bass knob was only making certain hz louder, but the knob was making them all louder

I was under the impression that it was similar to a gain setting if it was from your amp, if it was from a crossover or epicenter it was more like a "standard or tunable"
