Alternator Gone??

Recommended Posts

Alright so today the temperature was about 33 degrees, and i wasnt full tilting it today but i guess it was high enough, but anyway my voltage was around 13.9- 14.2 when i was moving at a stop sign right by my house it jumped down to 10.2 then it freaked me out and i just turned it off. When i got to the house i was trying to lock it and it didn't beep like it usually does so i got pretty frustrated, and i got it and tried to start the car. Well it didn't start at all. So i popped the hood disconnected the main power cable, unplugged the post and screwed them back in, and it started up. While the car didn't start i noticed the voltage at the battery was a 12.8 wtf. Could this be my alternator going out. It's 12.4 resting, 14.8 when car is on. I was in the process of getting a h.o alt, Im just making sure it's the alt right now. Big 3 hasn't been done yet (Too Cold).

Sounds like the terminals got a bit corroded and needed to be cleaned since you said it started back up, just pull all the terminals off and clean them and put it all back together and see where its at before jumping to conclusions on a bad anything.

that can actually damage some alternators from what i hear but yes it would work to test it. if your voltage gradually drops and doesnt go back up it could be the alternator but if you disconnected the battery and then hooked it back up and it was fine it seems like more of a bad connection.

R.I.P '01 blazer you treated my ears well until your transmission blew up.

I really don't know what it was it was a really weird situation, I don't think its a bad connection because i haven't messed with the connections in a week and its ran fine, the connections aren't corroded they are brand new side post adapters, I don't think the car flex's so much that the terminals came loose in a way (That would be pretty cool tho lol) I looked at the alt and on one side its got a black spot on the casing, i haven't tried to wipe it off, i was just too damn cold. Anybody think the cold weather is just playing games with my electrical system

When you have a 4 volt drop in almost an instant its not a battery/alt problem, its more to do with a connection that lost its connection somewhere and needs a bit of cleaning. just last week i moved my ground wire around and about 2 days later i got the click click when i turned the key so i knew i had to clean the terminals, it happens from time to time when you change things up.
