On the side of the box, did you just cut slits in the wood kind of like how you would do a kerf but not as deep? Thats a great idea and it came out looking nice. Then just have a flathead screwdriver with you when carpeting to tuck it into these grooves and run the razor blade along down in there to make a clean cut.
