Wiring Question. Voltage Across Resistors

Recommended Posts

resistance.jpg

there is the diagram. i need to know what the voltage is across each of the 4 resistors.

i believe R1 is 2V

R2 is 4V

R3 and R4 1/4V i think

help me out anyone?

Well i could be wrong but this is my 2 cents on how to think of it, the first thing you'd want to do is find the overall resistance of the circuit. r1 and r2 are in series and r3 and r4 are in parallel. so adding them all together would have a total of 20 ohms of resistance in the circuit. Now i dont know why i feel tempted to do this, but i want to take the resistance of each resistor and divide it by the total resistance of the circuit and multiply that by the voltage. So if you were to do that for r1, you'd get a voltage of 10V across the resistor, for r2 it would be 5V, r3 and r4 should both be 2.5V. When you add them together, they add up to 20 volts. Sad thing is i just covered this sections in physics a few weeks ago and i already forget how to do this shit. Someone will have to clarify me on this

that looks right

haha but i copied the question wrong i actually need to know the current not voltage

but thanks for teaching me how to do voltage. i eally do appreciate it i need to know that too

I think you're right about r1 and r2. since V/R gives you current. so 2A for r1 and 4A for r2. But for r3 and r4, remember that you can change those two 10 ohm parallel resistors to a 5 ohm series resistor, that would mean it would also be 4A. But since they're two parallel resistors the current splits in between the two resistors and so r3 and r4 both equal 2A. I THINK

why did the voltage from R1 to R2 go from 20v to 10v?
