I asked Dan Wiggins that one once iirc and tossed a few emails back and forth but didnt get very far on it. Read about it in a book from the library in college, so no, I don't... but they used to do it WAY back in the day when permanent magnets were expensive. I dont think you would have problems with linearity really.. especially if you used a spider setup like linked in some of the above subs.
